Piano repurposing part 6: Piano Harp Trellis

When we decided that we were going to repurpose this piano we wanted the projects to be useful things and to be part of our lives.  The piano harp sat all winter covered at the side of the house, just kind of in the back of our minds.  A couple of weeks ago we were working in our backyard.  Suddenly it hit both of us what we needed to do with the piano harp.

The first thing we did was spray paint the back of the harp to prevent rusting and give it some protection.

Then we dug and we dug.   We dug a trench that was about 6' wide and 2' deep we wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to go anywhere.  I forgot to take pictures as we were burying the bottom of it in the ground.  We put rocks in front of and behind of the base of the harp inside of the hole and then filled it in.  The harp isn't going anywhere, between the rocks, the depth of the hole, and how much we packed in the dirt around it, both of us really pushed on it to make sure it wasn't going to move on us or fall over.

We added a couple of climbing roses, now to wait for them to fill in, we are excited to see it at the end of the summer.

Mother's Day Flowers

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Mother's day yesterday.  I can now share this project because I didn't want to spoil the surprise for Grandma's.  The kids and I made these last week for the Grandma's but this is a great spring project to do as well and put them around the house.  My daughter cut out all of her hands after we traced them so it was a great cutting exercise for her as well.  My son is a year old, so I only traced his hands once then made a pattern from those.

Spring Craft with Kids

I was looking around for some ideas of things to do with my daughter and found some ideas with melting crayons in wax paper and then hang them in the window.  These are the materials that you need add glue and scissors to the group as well.

I began by tearing a piece of wax paper off and fold it in half making a crease then opened it back up.  Then using a crayon that doesn't have the paper on it still I used the pencil sharpener to create shavings of the crayon.  My daughter loved doing this part.

When we got the colors that we wanted on there we put them in some kind of a design to see if it would melt that same way.

Put your iron on medium and then having paper on the bottom as well as on top of the wax paper, put the iron on top of the paper for a few seconds at a time and keep checking it often.  It melted really fast for me, next time I'm going to turn the heat down on the iron a little bit more.

This is what it will look like after ironing it.

We did two more of these, next time we are going to use less wax so its more see through as well as only use light colors.  While they were cooling we cut out some flowers and glued some stems and leaves on them.

I then cut out circles from the wax paper a little bit bigger then the holes I cut out, then glued them to the flowers.  My daughter loved helping me out especially when it came to the gluing part.

After they were dried we hung them in the window.  We have these windows that have a lot of character but are a pain to clean and hang things on them.  I would love to do a whole garden in the window with grass and stuff, but its a little hard with these windows.  It was also a cloudy day so the picture is a little dark, hopefully the next sunny moment I remember to get a better picture of it.
